OpenMajors Terms of Service

I. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using OpenMajors ("the Site"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Site. These Terms govern your use of the Site and all services, content, and features made available through it, including but not limited to the Agora community forum, user accounts, reviews, and related services. These Terms also contain a binding arbitration clause and a class action waiver, described in Section XVI.
II. Description of the Service
OpenMajors is an online platform that provides:
- Major Reviews: Users may submit and view reviews about academic majors and educational programs, anonymously or with optional verification.
- Agora Community Forum: A registered-user community where members can create posts, ask questions, participate in polls, comment on discussions, follow other users and topics, and engage with content through voting.
- User Profiles: Registered accounts with public-facing profile information including display name, username, school, major, and optional avatar.
All content is intended to help users make more informed decisions based on peer-shared experiences.
III. Eligibility
To use this Site, you must be at least 16 years of age. By creating an account or using the Site, you represent and warrant that you meet this requirement and agree to abide by these Terms and all applicable laws and regulations.
IV. Account Registration and Security
To access certain features of the Site, including the Agora community forum, you must create an account. When registering, you agree to:
- Provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration.
- Maintain and promptly update your account information to keep it accurate.
- Maintain the security of your account credentials and not share them with others.
- Accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account.
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorized access to your account.
- Create only one account per person. Creating multiple accounts to evade bans or manipulate the platform is prohibited.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, contain false information, or are used in a manner that threatens the integrity of the platform.
V. User Conduct
You agree that when using the Site:
- You will not submit content that is false, misleading, defamatory, harassing, abusive, threatening, or discriminatory.
- You will not impersonate another person or submit content pretending to be someone else.
- You will not engage in bullying, doxxing, stalking, or any form of targeted harassment.
- You will not post spam, unsolicited advertisements, or self-promotional material.
- You will not attempt to manipulate votes, create fake engagement, or use automated tools to interact with the platform.
- You will not attempt to scrape, hack, or interfere with the operation of the Site.
- You will only submit content based on your own genuine experience and opinions.
- You understand and accept that your content may be reviewed by moderators before or after being published.
We reserve the right to remove any content that violates these rules or is otherwise deemed inappropriate at our sole discretion.
VI. Review Submissions and Verification
Users may submit reviews anonymously or choose to verify their reviews via email. If you submit a verified review:
- You agree to provide a valid email address solely for the purpose of verification.
- Your email will not be shared publicly or used for marketing purposes unless you separately opt in.
- Verified reviews may be marked as such to distinguish them from unverified submissions.
VII. Community Posts and Content (Agora)
When using the Agora community forum, you acknowledge and agree that:
- Posts, comments, poll responses, and other content you create are publicly visible to all users of the platform.
- Your display name, username, school, major, and avatar are publicly visible as part of your profile and alongside your content.
- Your email address is never publicly displayed and is used only for account management, transactional communications, and notification emails you have opted into.
- You may delete your own posts and comments, but cached or quoted versions may persist.
- We may impose rate limits on posting, commenting, and other actions to maintain platform health.
- We may remove, edit, or restrict visibility of any content at our sole discretion.
VIII. Content Ownership and License
By submitting content to the Site, including reviews, posts, comments, and poll responses, you:
- Retain ownership of the content you submit.
- Grant OpenMajors a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and sublicensable license to use, reproduce, modify, display, distribute, and create derivative works from your content for the purpose of operating and promoting the platform.
You acknowledge that once posted, your content is public and may be viewed, copied, or shared by other users.
IX. Community Moderation
OpenMajors reserves the right to moderate all user-generated content on the platform. This includes:
- Removing, editing, or hiding content that violates these Terms or community guidelines.
- Issuing warnings, temporary suspensions, or permanent bans to accounts that repeatedly violate rules.
- Investigating reports submitted by users through our reporting system.
We are not obligated to act on every report and make no guarantee regarding the timing or outcome of moderation decisions. Moderation decisions are made at our sole discretion and are final.
X. Communications and Notifications
By creating an account, you agree to receive the following types of communications:
- Transactional emails: Email verification, password resets, account security alerts, and content moderation notices. These are essential to your account and cannot be opted out of.
- Notification emails: Alerts about activity on your posts, new followers, and topics you follow. You may manage these in your notification preferences at any time.
- Marketing communications: Product updates, feature announcements, and community highlights. These are only sent if you explicitly opt in during registration or in your account settings. You may opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email.
XI. No Guarantee of Accuracy
User-submitted reviews, posts, and comments reflect personal opinions and may not be fact-checked. OpenMajors does not guarantee the accuracy, reliability, or truthfulness of any content submitted by users.
XII. Third-Party Links
The Site may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites. Your use of those sites is at your own risk.
XIII. Modification of Terms
We may update these Terms at any time. Updates will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date, and your continued use of the Site constitutes acceptance of any changes. For material changes, we may notify registered users via email or in-app notification.
XIV. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless OpenMajors and its affiliates, officers, agents, employees, and partners from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable attorney's fees, arising out of or in any way connected with your use of the Site, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of another.
XV. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, OpenMajors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or relating to your use of the Site or any content therein.
XVI. Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver
By using this Site, you agree to resolve any dispute or claim relating to these Terms or your use of the Site through binding arbitration rather than in court, except for certain types of disputes that may be brought in small claims court. You also agree to waive any right to participate in a class action or class-wide arbitration.
You may opt out of arbitration within 30 days of your first use of the Site by sending an email to contact@openmajors.com with the subject "Arbitration Opt-Out."
XVII. Account Deletion
You may request deletion of your account at any time by contacting us at contact@openmajors.com. Upon deletion:
- Your profile information will be removed.
- Your posts and comments will be anonymized (attributed to "Deleted User") but may remain visible to preserve discussion context.
- Your email and personal data will be deleted from our systems within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
XVIII. Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Site at any time, without notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is otherwise harmful to the Site or its users.
XIX. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States. Any legal action or proceeding relating to these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the courts located in the United States, and you consent to the jurisdiction thereof.
